A range of different pre-registration pharmacist training programmes are offered by the Trust as follows:
A pre-registration trainee’s day is divided into two parts, with half of the day in an allocated area of the Pharmacy department and half of the day undertaking clinical duties. Trainees rotate through a variety of departments within the pharmacy to gain experience in both technical and professional aspects of hospital pharmacy. This can include the inpatient dispensary, distribution, Medicines Information and clinical trials.
Whilst on the wards, supervision and support is provided by experienced clinical pharmacists and follows a comprehensive clinical pharmacy training programme. Clinical rotations include surgery, medicine, neurology, paediatrics and admissions unit. We also arrange for trainees to shadow senior pharmacists in specialist clinical areas such as transplant or critical care
The pre-registration training programme is continually reviewed and developed in response to both trainee feedback and the national agenda for pharmacy. Specific examples include:

The Pharmacy department
Our progressive and friendly pharmacy department consists of approximately 250 staff. The department provides the following services: clinical pharmacy services, dispensary, Medicines Information, aseptics (TPN and oncology), quality assurance, clinical trials dispensary and stores. We have many specialist pharmacists and a number of consultant pharmacists working across the Trust in a broad range of clinical areas.
Located on the Cambridge Biomedical Research Campus, Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) is one of the largest and best known Trusts in the country. The Trust delivers care through Addenbrooke’s Hospital and the Rosie maternity unit. CUH is also a leading national centre for a range of specialist treatments; one of only five academic health science centres in the UK, and a prominent university teaching hospital with a worldwide reputation. Building on these different elements, CUH’s vision is to be one of the best academic healthcare organisations in the world. Addenbrooke’s Hospital has approximately 1,100 inpatient beds for a wide range of clinical areas including surgery, medicine, paediatrics, neurology, transplant, critical care, infectious diseases and oncology.
In 2014, CUH was the first UK NHS Trust to implement an innovative digital transformation programme – eHospital. This Trust-wide, advanced digital system is used on a daily basis by pharmacy staff and in conjunction with dispensary robotics has delivered a significant reduction in dispensing times. Pre-reg pharmacists are fully trained in the use of the eHospital system
