The Pharmacy department
The pharmacy department at Broomfield hospital is a medium sized, professional, forward thinking department which gives all staff the opportunity to develop their full potential. Our department covers different areas, including: Inpatient Dispensary, Outpatient dispensary, Clinical Ward Services, Technical Services, Medicines Information and Stores.
Clinical Service: Pharmacy provides an extensive clinical service to inpatient wards which includes; undertaking medicines reconciliation, reviewing of medications to ensure safe and effective use, formulation of individual pharmaceutical care plans, therapeutic drug monitoring for specific drugs and the education of patients about their medications. Pharmacy staff are a valued and essential part of the ward team and work in partnership with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to optimize the pharmaceutical care of patients.
Dispensary: Pharmacy provides both an inpatient and outpatient dispensary service to all areas of the trust. We have embraced technology in this area with the use of automated dispensing and the introduction of an electronic tracking system allowing us to quickly and efficiently trace the progress of prescriptions. This service is fast-paced but through effective team work medications are delivered to patients in a safe and timely manner.
Technical Services Unit: The aseptic unit is responsible for the sterile manufacture of chemotherapy for our Chemotherapy Day Unit. We also prepare Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), Clinical Trials medications and other high risk medicines to the hospital. Staff working here must diligently follow operating procedures to ensure Good Manufacturing Practices are followed and the products prepared are of the highest quality. We also have dedicated haematology/oncology pharmacists that provide clinical support to the oncology and haematology teams.
Medicines Information: This enquiry answering service receives a variety of queries from both patients and staff from within the hospital. Queries range from the safety of medications in pregnancy to how to administer intravenous medications on the ward. Staff based here have a variety of specialist resources available to them and learn about the most appropriate resources to use when tackling complex queries.
Stores: Are responsible for receiving all deliveries and supply medication to the dispensary, hospital wards, outpatient areas and external hospitals. The stores team also provides a ward stock top up service.
